Important Notice

It is not my intention to denigrate Saudi Arabia or its people. It’s like everywhere else, there is good and there is bad. I would rather focus on the unusual and the humourous. Offence is not intended.

Politics
“The country is not perfect. The media cannot be trusted, mistreatment of religious minorities is common and there are some that live in fear.” You can decide for yourself whether that statement is about Saudi Arabia, the UK, or any country for that matter.
Religion

To quote the Joker, “Why can’t we all just get along?”

khalas.
That is all I will say about either subject.

Being English

Is there anything more English than...

  • Sitting on Swedish furniture.
  • Eating Indian food.
  • Drinking Belgian beer and French wine.
  • Watching American programs on a Japanese TV.
  • Driving a German car.
  • Deep distrust of foreigners.

Yeah, it would seem the national dish of England is no longer a Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding, bangers and mash, or a good fry up, it is curry!

Well, there is always that cuppa tea.
Oh, tea... Indian, Chinese (sigh!)

i guess that's globalization...

but i guess what you have doesn't define who you are
or as Tyler Durden (brad pitt in fight club) said :
"You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your f*** khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world. "

(i know it's out of context to quote fight club, but i LOVE that movie!!!)

Hosam,

I think he was right as well. I cannot stand people who define themselves by their material possesions or their job.

I guess that is why I HATE the Arab custom of introducing Engineers. The idea of prefacing my name by "Mohandas" bugs me to no end.

I learn more about a person by seeing what reading materials they have in their home than I do by what car they drive, what their job is, or what brand of clothes they are wearing.

Being English -Being in England (experiences):
- soaps and football (just loving it!)
- full English breakfast (Why would anyone want to have beans for breakfast?)
- bindge drinking culture (some people just can't get enough!)
- marmite - You either love it or hate it! (I love it!)
- roundabouts - you cannot go for half a mile without encountering 2! Maybe they make the country larger with all that going around in circles!
- christmas puding - Does anyone likes it?
- pork pies?????
- brown sauce -Yak!
- English people are friendly and open, they just don't talk to strangers - not in London (maybe in chatrooms)
- why do British people never move down the bus/tube but stand in a big sweaty crowd near the doors?
- Bathrooms with carpets, no mixer taps, no plugs (how I never managed to eletrocute myself in my country?
- TV licences - Why?
- at least 20 take away menu next to the telephone (how true!)
- royal family -Does anyone care?
- making appointment with your GP -if you think you'll be ill in 6 weeks time, please book it now!
- expensive childcare
- when you walk down the street or go to the park you are lucky if you can avoid the dog poo and rubbish! -
- cricket (game with no begining or end)
- this is the place where your boss is American, your cleaner is Turkish, your neighborougs are Africans, your collagues are Indians, your bus driver is Pakistani, your builder is Polish, your childminder is French, your friends from all over the world!etc
That's all for now!

Mohandas - isn't that Gandhi's first name?

أبو سنان said...

Mohandas is the Arabic word for Engineer.

Gandhi was Mahatma wasn't it? Like the old joke, I'm going to get mahatma coat.
The national dish of England is bacon butties, surely. I'm moving to Saudi soon so I'll have to do without those for a while...

Martini'a list is great fun!

I always thought Mohandas was a purely Indian name.

Whatever happened to fish and chips? I learnt in London that French fries were called chips in England!
